Perception. Matter. Stillness.
Immersive colour environments exploring perception, material agency and wellbeing.
Material Evolution Lab is the artist research practice of Christa Leask, exploring the relationship between matter, perception and human consciousness.

Rooted in the Designing Stillness research developed at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, the studio investigates how environments, materials and sensory conditions participate in shaping human experience.

Drawing on new materialist philosophy and the concept of matter as agentic rather than inert, the work approaches environments not as passive backdrops but as active participants in the formation of awareness. Through immersive colour-change environments and sensory installations, the studio explores how carefully composed material conditions can create space for stillness, reflection and emotional regulation.

At a time when contemporary life is characterised by speed, distraction and ecological imbalance, Material Evolution Lab asks how design and art might restore moments of stillness within human-material care networks, enabling individuals to reconnect with themselves, with others, and with the living systems of the planet.

The work integrates artistic practice with insights from neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology and consciousness research, translating complex ideas into experiential forms that invite audiences to perceive their relationship to Self and the world differently.

A New Era of Innovation at the Intersection of Design, Consciousness & Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)
Our mission is simple:
To empower users with agency over long-term wellbeingthrough design.

We design tools, platforms and methodologies that connect scientific insights with practical daily life. Our work helps individuals and organisations:

-
Recognise and regulate their inner states
-
Develop nervous system literacy
-
Build resilience and emotional balance
-
Create environments supportive of health and creativity

Why This Matters
Scientific evidence shows that chronic stress and emotional dysregulation contribute to physical and mental health challenge. Yet research also indicates that when individuals develop awareness of their internal states and have tools to engage natural self-regulatory processes, they are more likely to sustain health and resilience.

Material Evolution Lab aims to design experiences and tools that make these processes visible, accessible, and engaging, allowing people to consciously navigate their inner and outer worlds. This is not about “fixing” individuals - but about supporting natural capacities for regulation and balance.

At Material Evolution Lab, we explore how science and consciousness can inform innovative approaches to human flourishing and social progress, our mission is to help people connect with their own physiology and inner rhythms - because we believe sustainable futures begin within.
